On his 18th birthday, Adrian Gonzalez was shot in the shoulder. The bullet damaged his diaphragm, stomach and lung while also causing a T-11 Complete SCI, which left him paralyzed below the waist. Because of the damage to his organs and the surgeries needed to repair them, Adrian is coping with severe pain, debilitating nausea, and serious infections.
In addition to the physical pain, the injuries left he and his Mom financially devastated. Mom took unpaid leave to care for Adrian and though she tried, she could not make ends meet, it was simply impossible. She had medical insurance, but it did not cover many of the items he and the family needed. Combined, the physical, mental, emotional and financial hardship the family faced took a toll on their overall wellbeing.
This is where Rally4Reilly & Friends helped. Sharp Healthcare referred the family to us and we were able to provide some reprieve by way of a Wellness Grant. The grant covered rent for four months, car payments for four months, groceries, the balance on Adrian’s medical bed, gift cards, and medical and hygiene supplies. We also offered peer mentoring.
Peer Mentoring is extremely important for the wellbeing of the survivor and their family. It aids the family in a healthy recovery and gives them an opportunity to talk with someone who understands what they are going through.
We are committed to making a difference in the community. We can also connect anyone who has an active open case with the State of California Disability or the Dept. of Rehabilitation with the Workability 3 program. This is a program that offers classes and a chance at finding a career or re-entry back into the workforce.

We were able to help a special family who had spent the last year at Rady Children’s Hospital. Their home was neither safe nor equipped to bring their son home and their financial resources had been drained. Mom was training to become a qualified healthcare provider, so she could provide care while also making some money to cover their ever-rising expenses. The family was able to secure adequate housing and another local non-profit was able to cover move-in costs, but the family was still struggling. So, Rally4Reilly & Friends gladly stepped in to provide a month’s rent—giving Mom space to breathe while finishing her critical education.
