Over the summer, Reilly adjusted exceptionally well to his new forever home. He was particularly happy with his new dinosaur themed bedroom, his new computer and quadstick that we are working to program and teach him, as well as the size and layout of the house as it allows for him and his wheelchair to go wherever he wants. He is always excited to tell friends and family about his new house, how he has all of his toys in his bedroom and how much he loves being there.
Given how quickly Reilly is growing, it quickly became apparent that some adjustments to... Read more on our blog |

Thanks in part to Rally4Reilly & Friends and the generous hearts of others I’ve met along the way, I’ve been able to get back on the road. My first time back behind the wheel, I drove for twenty minutes around my neighborhood (there may have been many happy crying breaks) with a sense of pride I thought I lost three years ago. Each milestone of independence I gain, whether large or small, adds to my self-confidence, self-love, and sense of self. My car mechanic told me this as I left the lot, “Don’t get stuck in your everyday routine. Get out and drive because you can. Go out and live your life, do the things that make you happy, and enjoy the process.” I can happily say that I’m another step closer to living my life, not letting life happen around me because I can.

ello! My name is Ashley and I’m a C3 C4 incomplete quadriplegic as of 2019. I remember at the beginning of my injury feeling like my life was over and there was no future to look forward to. While I did have to go through a grieving process of the body I once had, my thinking couldn’t have been further from the truth. Like many newly disabled people, I’ve adapted to my new mind, body, and environment. The one thing holding me back was not having the freedom and independence to drive. Thanks in part to Rally4Reilly & Friends and the generous hearts of others I’ve met along the way, I’ve been able to get back on the road.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when cells within the spinal cord become damaged, compromising the nerve tracts that relay signals up and down the spinal cord (like kinking a garden hose, impeding the flow of water). Severe spinal cord injury often causes paralysis (loss of control over voluntary movement and muscles of the body) and loss of sensation and reflex function below the point of injury, including autonomic activity such as breathing and other activities like bowel and bladder control.

Kyle, Tammy & Reilly move into Reilly's Forever Home. This was several years in the making! There were so many delays and hurdles to overcome while building a home during a pandemic. But, finally, after all of that, they are enjoying their new Reilly’s Forever Home! It's 100% ADA Compliant with all the bells and whistles that Reilly will need and use. No more carrying Reilly up and downstairs. This home is a single-story and there is plenty of room for Reilly to blow through the extra-wide doorways. They will have a raised garden that Reilly will be able to roll up to and enjoy. They will also have a path that is suitable for Reilly to meander down to the stream bed on their property

From Adrian’s Mom, Danielle:
In October of 2021, I received a phone call that changed my life and the life of my family forever. I was notified my son was shot in a park and no one could find him. I frantically searched for my son at every hospital in the South Bay Area and by calling the police department in San Diego and Chula Vista. My son was listed as a John Doe because he had no identifying information on his person. I finally found my son at UCSD hospital and was notified he was shot in the arm and the bullet went through his chest damaging his lung, stomach, diaphragm, and ultimately severed his spine at T11 rendering him paralyzed from the waist down. Even though we were thankful he was alive, it was still difficult to fully understand and comprehend what that actually meant. My son has had a difficult road to recovery over the past six months. He has been... Read more on our website https://www.rally4reilly.org/recipient-stories |

JR was at Rady Children’s Hospital over a year
In November 2019 Emily from Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego reached out to us regarding a family in their care. Joey “JR” DeLeon had been at Rady’s for over a year after suffering a spinal cord stroke. The stroke cut the blood flow to his spinal cord and he was paralyzed below the shoulder and on a ventilator. After a year, he was moved to Berardi Center--a place for medically fragile children--where he stayed for a few months. His family wanted him home, but his parents were struggling financially and the hospital could not release him without proper housing. Mom spent all her time either at the hospital or studying to become a certified caregiver, so she could make a little money while caring full-time for JR. Dad was working, but could only afford a small room above a garage. They needed an apartment. Rally4Reilly & Friends, along with another nonprofit organization, was able to provide the family with a Wellness Grant for deposit and two months of rent, a tablet, Christmas gifts and a traditional Filipino dinner for the family to celebrate, groceries, hygiene and medical supplies, gift cards (he bought a big tv that he loves) and a birthday gift for his sister. We are honored to have the opportunity to help the DeLeon family secure a safe space and provide comfort and independence for them during a fantastically stressful time. If you or someone you love needs financial assistance, our Wellness Grant may be right for you. Learn more at: https://www.rally4reilly.org/wellness-grants |

Steps to Managing Stress
1.Recognize warning signs early. These might include irritability, sleep problems, and forgetfulness. Know your own warning signs, and act to make changes. Donʼt wait until you are overwhelmed. 2. Identify sources of stress. Ask yourself, “What is causing stress for me?” Sources of stress might be that you have too much to do, family disagreements, feelings of inadequacy, or the inability to say no. 3. Identify what you can and cannot change. Remember, we can only change ourselves; we cannot change another person. When you try to change things over which you have no control, you will only increase your sense of frustration. Ask yourself, “What do I have some control over? What can I change?” Even a small change can make a big difference. The challenge we face as caregivers is well expressed in the following words modified from the original Serenity Prayer (attributed to American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr): “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and (the) wisdom to know the difference. 4. Take action. Taking some action to reduce stress gives us back a sense of control. Stress reducers can be simple activities like walking and other forms of exercise, gardening, meditation, or having coffee with a friend. Identify some stress reducers that work for you. People with spinal cord injury (SCI) often need help with tasks of daily living. These include dressing, grooming, personal hygiene, and eating. They also include home management tasks, such as cooking, paying bills, and cleaning. A caregiver or personal assistant can provide that help. In some cases, a family member can fill this role. But in many cases, the caregiver is a paid employee.

Research on the use of growth hormones in spinal cord injury treatments has been gaining interest and traction over the past several years. A small study conducted in 2017 in Barcelona, Spain, suggests that the use of growth hormones could be a potential treatment option in the future and that there is a need for additional research in this area.
In the Spain study, 18 people with complete spinal cord injuries received either a growth hormone or placebo treatment: “Those treated with growth hormone had significant improvements in the measures of self-care and respiration and sphincter control at both three and six months. The growth hormone group also regained far more feeling below the site of spinal injury after six months of treatment compared with the placebo group." Learn more on SpinalCord.com's site |

Did you know that the spinal cord plays an integral role in your ability to sweat? When you suffer a spinal cord injury, the communication between your brain and sweat glands below the injury site may be impeded or eliminated depending on your level of injury and its severity.
Anhidrosis, also known as hypohidrosis, is the inability to sweat normally. Issues with sweating and body thermoregulation (temperature regulation) are common symptoms of autonomic dysfunctions. This means that spinal cord injury survivors whose sweating abilities are impacted are unable to cool themselves and require air conditioning, water, or fans to avoid overheating or heatstroke. There are many opportunities for the treatment of paralysis that are now available or soon to be available. It is not to say you should not be content with your current situation. People who are reading this are doing so because they are thriving even if they are hopeful for improvement. Not everyone is seeking changes. Too many ‘hypes’ about upcoming research can be disappointing. However, it is important to know what is on the horizon so you can be prepared and make thoughtful decisions.

Ricks life took an interesting turn in the summer of 1976 when on the way home from work one day he left his motorcycle and sailed through the air introducing himself to a car coming the other way. Needless to say, they never did become friends. A T-8 spinal cord injury gave Rick new perspective on life and with the gauntlet being thrown down, he accepted the challenge.
Ricks goal was to get his college degree and re-enter the workforce. His first degree was in Physical Education with the second being in Business. The dynamic duo he thought and he was right, they led him to the rehab segment of the healthcare industry where he worked for 32 years. Rick stated that getting the chance to meet so many incredible people and to get the opportunity to change a person’s life is incredibly rewarding. in 2015 Rick was asked by United Spinal Association to start a Chapter in Southern California which after much thought he agreed. Awfully glad they asked he thought. I love being a part of a team of dedicated people, whose mission is to provide resources that will have a positive impact on a person’s life and the lives of those around them. On a personal note, Rick has been married to his beautiful wife Karen for 33 years and has five incredible children (Rick, Richelle, Jenna, Aimee and Kyle) and four fantastic grandkids (Isabella, Lucas, Reese and Parker). Ricks passion is to be involved with great organizations such as United Spinal, helping to improve the quality of life for those living with paralysis.
